I have another review for you today! I was sent these gorgeous butterfly water decals from the born pretty store for my honest review. I've only tried water decals once before, and without much success... But I gained some experience from that time, so I was confidend I would do better this time!
Last time I held the decal in water for 20 seconds, then placed it on my nail, but it was difficult to place the decal and when it was that wet I wasn't able to move it around and it got crooked and scrunched up in places. So this time I figured I would wet my nail, plunge the decal in to water for a couple of seconds, then apply it to my nail and hold a wet cotton ball over it until the paper backing lifted. You know, like we did with temporary tattoos when we were kids?
So I went ahead with great confidence, starting with my thumb and it worked perfectly! Only... When I removed the paper backing, the butterfly was all white! I had no idea what had gone wrong, so dumbfounded I tried again, hoping for some reason it would work with the second butterfly. Obviously it didn't.
So I googled a little, and saw that some people removed the paper backing before sticking the decal on to the nail. So I decided to try that method instead, even though I had my doubts it would work, imagining the decal dissolving on my tweezers before even touching the nail... But to my sruprise, it worked! And was pretty easy as well, I could even move the decal around on my nail alittle before it set.
The instructions say to blow dry the water decals before adding a top coat, I didn't do that, and I don't really know why you would need to, maybe to speed up drying time? When the water had dried I simply added a layer of top coat to finish it all off.
The package comes with 128 butterfly water decals and 6 orchid decals, that is a whole lot of water decals for the price of $4.99! Depending on how many you use each time, you will get quite a few manis out of one package, defenitely worth the price.
My idea for this mani was butterflies flying at twilight, the gorgeous short time of day right after the sun has set and the sky is burning with beautiful reds, purples, blues, pinks, yellows and all kinds of gorgeousness. So I sponged a gradient, over white, using the holographic China Glaze - Galactic Gray, Infra Red and Strap On Your Moonboots and a tiny bit of RARE - Lily to add little yellow at the horizon. The colors worked pretty much like I had planned, only the holographic effect is almost non existent... I'm assuming most of the holographic shimmer was left on the sponge? It would probably have been better to use one of the holos as a base, but even if the holo is gone, the colors look great, and just like at twilight :)
